Designers Enter Classroom Challenge
Liollio Architecture has partnered with the Charleston Development Academy to enter the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge. The competition, organized by Architecture for Humanity, proposed to design a better portable classroom. The winning entry will be awarded $50,000 to help fund construction of the new classroom design for the school. Five members of the Liollio team – Angie Brose, Seth Cantley, Jennifer Charzewski, AIA, Jennifer Hurst, and Brian Sanders, AIA – met with fifth & sixth grade students at CDA to educate them about architecture and guide them through design exercises, including drawing floor plans and making shoebox models to represent their ideal classroom. Collaboration with the students and teachers resulted in a classroom design that utilizes customizable cabinet components, helping the classroom adapt to the multiple functions and unique needs of the school. The modular classroom construction is pre-fabricated off-site and delivered to the school with minimal on-site assembly. The innovative design incorporates many sustainable materials and qualities to provide a healthier, more efficient, and more inspiring learning environment for the students and teachers. Winners of the competition will be announced in the fall of 2009.
