THE CITADEL MCALISTER FIELD HOUSE

-
The Old Exchange is considered to be one of the three most historically significant colonial buildings in the US. Numerous preservation, reconstruction, and conservation exercises have been conducted over the years. However, some of those exercises, muddied the interpretation of the property, adding conjectural or inaccurate features. Liollio assisted in fund raising and grant writing efforts for this project (Save America’s Treasures.) During our case study and before recommendations were made, we led detailed discussions with the State Historic Preservation Office and the local preservation community. We developed a treatment approach that clarified the interpretation of the property, while also repairing its condition and easing maintenance. This balanced approach retained the client’s preference for the building’s c.1980 preserved appearance. We addressed structural upgrades to the framing systems, designed for miscellaneous repairs to plumbing and existing toilet room finishes, and provided historically sensitive renovations for event space on the second floor. The design team then identified priority preservation issues including the cupola, exterior stucco, the roof and flashing, and exterior wood.
