FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH SCHOOL c.1910

-
First Baptist Church School of Charleston SC has used this former residence as a classroom building for nearly 70 years. After a severe electrical fire closed the building in 2012, Liollio provided a Condition Assessment Report and then executed a program of preservation and rehabilitation, transforming the building into a 21st century educational space while respectfully and sensitively restoring and preserving the character-defining historic elements of the building. The goals for this wood framed and supplemental steel building were to repair the fire damage and to increase the shared space between the church and the school; upgrade building systems to comply with all current codes; provide modern, flexible, multifunctional teaching spaces; and upgrade the building envelope and systems to improve energy performance. We provided campus visioning exercises with key groups while coordinating communications between the school and surrounding neighborhood. Liollio also worked closely with the Preservation Society of Charleston and Historic Charleston Foundation, City Zoning and BAR Staff to achieve project approval.
