JAMES ISLAND PUBLIC SERVICE DISTRICT FIRE STATION 1 HEADQUARTERS

-
The James Island Public Service District (JIPSD) is a special purpose district created in 1961 to provide services on James Island SC. Through automatic aid partnership with other entities, James Island Public Service District’s Class One ISO Fire Department provides Fire and Rescue services to over 10,000 homes and businesses on the Island and surrounding communities. The new Headquarters Station #1 replaced a 58-year-old station at a new location. Conceptualized as a community hub, the new Fire Station Headquarters was seen as a growth opportunity for the Sea Island town. Situated along a busy road and just inside a residential neighborhood, the new station needed to respond to transition between commercial corridor and residential scale. Through community engagement sessions and meetings with the Fire Chiefs and staff, it became clear that all stakeholders wanted to encourage sustainable practices, support their first responders, and see a building that represents the island vernacular, rather than an imposing monument. The new station enhances response capabilities and houses administration, training facilities, the ladder truck, battalion chief, and reserve apparatus. The 12,400 SF station is designed to reflect the Lowcountry Sea Island character of James Island and to complement the grand oak trees protected on the site.
