NATIONAL PARK SERVICE FORT SUMTER NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK c.1859

  • Liollio worked with the park staff at the Fort Sumter National Historic Site to provide design and investigation services to assist with preparation of the Historic Structures Report for Fort Sumter and Battery Huger. This effort had two primary objectives: to provide a concise history of the architecture and evaluate treatment options for the historic features still visible today. Liollio provided historical architectural assistance in the research and evaluation of the past design information as a way of explaining the present. There were numerous existing present-day features that do not correspond to the original 1829 plans for the Fort, making it crucial to evaluate past historic events to determine when, how and why various changes were made. This effort helped clarify the Fort’s history and set historic priorities for where preservation and rehabilitation efforts needed to be focused. While the history of Fort Sumter and Battery Huger is significant to this effort, the primary focus for Liollio consisted of evaluating the existing conditions and preparing recommendations for preservation or rehabilitation. A great amount of effort was dedicated to on site evaluation of the Fort’s materials such as brick, iron, and concrete, and how these materials, from different time periods, work together. Liollio’s evaluation and recommendations for correcting the progressive deterioration of historical materials due to the coastal environment provided solutions without negatively impacting the historic structure.
