The College of Charleston School of Natural and Environmental Sciences is a teaching and research facility committed to the integration of discovery, innovation and education. Labs, lecture halls, classrooms, community spaces and faculty offices comprise the majority of the building's program connected by open internal spaces that foster an interactive and collaborative environment. One design challenge was to develop an aesthetic that complements the scale and historic nature of the fine textured surrounding buildings while accommodating a 125,000 SF program on a confined urban site. Our team's approach was to utilize the context of surrounding buildings to influence the design and materials selection for color and surface characteristics conveying the craftsmanship of the many historic structures within this neighborhood.
