Celebrating National Library "Shelfie" Day

Mez Joseph

Happy National Library “Shelfie” Day! This day is celebrated annually on the fourth Wednesday in January to promote reading and libraries by encouraging people to take photos of their bookshelves and share them. Initiated in 2014 by the New York Public Library, the day encourages sharing unique personal, school, or library book collections. In addition to sharing “shelfies” today, we thought we’d ask our studio to share some of their favorite books and why they love them. Here are a few of their favorite picks:

The Architect's Apprentice by Elif Shafak
Why I love this book: The story is beautifully told with such rich context as it demonstrates how architecture can be a metaphor for life.
Favorite Passage: “It was after this incident that Jahan understood his master’s secret resided not in his toughness, for he was not tough, nor in his indestructibility, for he was not indestructible, but in his ability to adapt to change and calamity, and to rebuild himself, again and again, out of the ruins. While Jahan was made of wood, and Davud of metal, and Nikola of stone, and Yusuf of glass, Sinan was made of flowing water. When anything blocked his course, he would flow under, around, above it, however he could; he found his way through the cracks, and kept flowing forward.”

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Why I love this book: I first read Flowers for Algernon in my 8th grade English class, and it's been my go-to book ever since. When I need to read something meaningful, it helps me think outside of my own head.

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
Why I love this book: It’s an intense, uncompromising defense of individualism, integrity, and creative independence. For me personally, it was life-changing, empowering, and deeply thought-provoking.
Favorite Passage: "Your work, the material the earth offers you, and what you make of it, is the meaning of life."

The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Why I love this book: It’s a collection of poetic essays in which a wise prophet shares profound insights on love, passion, work, reason, death, freedom, and more, offering timeless wisdom on the human condition.
Favorite Passage: "I do not recognize anyone’s right to one minute of my life. Nor to any part of my energy. Nor to any achievement of mine... I don't intend to build in order to have clients. I intend to have clients in order to build."

Happy reading to all, and remember, reading is fundamental!

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: A Day On, Not A Day Off

Today, and all week long, we reflect on and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by honoring his message and vision centered on achieving racial equality, justice, and human rights for all people. The MLK Day of Service, designated by Congress in 1994, transforms Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday into a "day on, not a day off" for national volunteerism, encouraging Americans to volunteer in their communities to honor Dr. King's legacy of justice and service by tackling issues like poverty, hunger, and education.

Realize the Dream was born from the belief in the power of service to not just help others but to also build understanding, empathy and unity between people and communities. It’s a bold call to perform 100 million hours of service by the 100th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's birth and a rallying cry for us all to make a difference through acts of love, compassion and goodwill. Celebrating National Preservation Month 2025

Mez Joseph

As our team celebrates National Preservation Month, we reflect on the significance of our nation’s historic places. Liollio has been honored with the preservation of many structures and sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our clients have entrusted us with buildings both grand and modest, both museum-quality restorations and adaptive reuses, all in keeping with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.

Whether hiding fire protection systems or preserving a doorknob touched by five generations, we understand both the technical and the artistic. We embrace a collaborative, thoughtful, and sensitive approach to assessing and restoring historic structures. Historically and culturally sensitive projects, done well, are a balanced combination of head and heart. We look forward to the opportunity to continue preserving these historic places for the next generation.

Happy Earth Day 2025!

Liollio celebrates Earth Day 2025! As our recognition of Earth Day comes to a close, we turn the spotlight on the National Park Service U.S. Virgin Island’s Resource Management and Science Facility and Park Staff Housing in Lind Point. Designed for extreme resilience, this facility provides staff residences, areas to encourage community engagement and outreach, and space for research and storage, allowing the protection and study of the islands’ heritage for future generations. Parks are essential in caring for our country’s cultural treasures and recreational sites – and we encourage you to go and open the door - get outside and explore them!

Earth Day 2025: Visit Your State Parks!

Earth Day is just one week away! As we continue to highlight projects that celebrate the great outdoors, we turn to South Carolina’s Parks, Recreation & Tourism’s Charles Towne Landing. This 664-acre historic site features six miles of trails for walking, biking, and exploring, along with the Animal Forest natural habitat zoo, 80 acres of gardens, and versatile event spaces. Designed to be transparent, the surrounding landscape remains the visual focus. South Carolina’s State Parks offer spaces for the community to gather, learn, and explore – together!

As Earth Day approaches, Liollio encourages everyone to get outside and enjoy their local parks! Check out Carr-Richardson Park - a hidden gem nestled in the historic Ashleyville/Maryville neighborhood of West Ashley in Charleston, S.C. Alongside the City of Charleston, Liollio prioritized sustainable and resilient design to allow this beautiful space to be enjoyed for generations to come. CCPL Celebrates National American Indian Heritage Month With Architecture

Mez Joseph

Charleston County Public Library recently hosted a Native American Architecture Program at the Main Library to celebrate National American Indian Heritage Month in November. The Liollio team volunteers for CCPL’s annual program to teach children about vernacular architecture and native structures and dwellings. Following a presentation of vernacular architecture, children were given an hour to build a dwelling of their choosing with the help and direction of architects and designers. The Liollio team had a wonderful time with the children and CCPL staff. It is always a pleasure spending time and sharing knowledge with our community. To potentially spark a child’s interest in history, architecture, and design is a special and rewarding experience. Thank you to Charleston County Public Library for hosting our team!
